Sprinkling & Styhead Tarns Walk Report

The latest walk for members of Northern Lakes Accommodation Providers (NLAP) took place on Monday 24th November.  This was a classic winter circuit taking in the famous mountain crossroads at Sprinkling and Styhead Tarns where the valleys of Langdale, Wasdale and Borrowdale converge.

Starting from Seathwaite Farm the route took the group to Stockley Bridge and then via a steady, but significant, climb alongside Grains Gill and Ruddy Gill to the base of Great End, where some time was spent trying to find a sheltered spot for a lunch break!  Emerging from the relative shelter alongside Ruddy Gill a bitter wind was encountered, with a small amount of snow underfoot and a light dusting covering Great End completing the wintery scene.  From here the group followed the path beside Sprinkling Tarn before arriving at Styhead and then skirting around the tarn to follow the course of Styhead Gill down towards Taylorgill Force, before peeling off back to Stockley Bridge and the farm.

Whilst obviously cold the afternoon was dry and some fantastic views were had back towards Keswick and to the surrounding lakeland fells of Scafell Pike, Great Gable etc.
